What:
Women who work in the world of professional football have come together in a commitment to raise $1 million for the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa. Donations will go to
USA for UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency-A two-time Nobel Peace Prize winner).
How it Works:
During the 2011-2012 professional football season, Gridiron Girls 4 Africa will serve as ambassadors for this cause by making media appearances to generate awareness about the current crisis. Gridiron Girls 4 Africa will also use their resources to encourage donations from corporations, entrepreneurs, athletes & the pubic sector.
A donation check will be presented to the UN Refugee Agency during Super Bowl week in Indianapolis.
Why This Movement Is Needed NOW
• The Horn of Africa is experiencing the worst drought in 60 years
• The United Nations has declared famine in 6 areas of Somalia
• Internal military groups are blocking aid coming into affected areas of Somalia
• Women & children are trekking up to 30 days to reach refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. Many are raped,
robbed and/or killed during the desperate attempt to find food, shelter, water and medical attention
• 12M people are in need of help
